Finding the right Thin Client Software or Zero Client Software is equally as important as finding the right VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) devices themselves. If you work in Information Technology and have anything to do with VDI solutions, you are probably already aware of this. But, have you really given any thought as to what to look for in a VDI software management...

By illustrating the differences between Thin Clients and Zero Clients I hope to better define them as well. Both are small form factor, solid state computing devices, specifically designed for a server based typology, currently generally associated with Desktop Virtualization (VDI) and Host Desktop Environments (DaaS), but they have many different characteristics that are important to distinguish. Below we will discuss the key differences between Thin Clients and Zero Clients.

Back in the day, long before the internet became a household word and even before "personal computers" even existed, if you used a computer, the odds are you actually were using a terminal connected to a server somewhere. While the concept of "client/server" computing may seem like a new concept, it has actually been around for decades. That's because each terminal connected to a server is, in concept, a client.

As many already use Microsoft (MS) Lync as an instant messaging app, Thin Client technology has taken a step forward by pre-installing the application on Thin Client devices for heightened end-user experience. This is a primary example of how VDI solutions are becoming more related to a PC experience. For those of you who are not familiar with Microsoft Lync, the application allows for efficient communication between companies allowing for instant messaging, voice communication, and web conferencing.

Windows 8
Viewed as a failure to some and a success by others, the release of the Windows 8 Operating System has caused quite a stir amongst the computing world since it hit the market in October. The two sides are separated by one of two ideas; Microsoft will mark its demise with this OS, or others who believe that Windows has opened the doors with this release and provided a...

Thin computing has always offered enterprise users solid cost and business benefits and these aspects have improved drastically with the wide spread adoption of Desktop Virtualization or VDI. Couple this value proposition with improved energy efficiency, a minimal environmental impact and corporations have even more incentive to choose thin clients. 10ZiG’s Energy Saving Thin/Zero Clients are solid state devices with skinny locked down Linux/windows operating systems (OS) or no OS in...

There are many benefits to switching from PCs to thin clients. One of the benefits is the effect to our environment. Research has found that PCs use twice as much energy as a thin client environment. PCs average between 65 – 250 watts of energy whereas thin clients require only about 40 watts including the server.

Ever since Thin Clients were conceived the message has always been that unlike PC’s the CPU on the Thin Client is unimportant. The concept this comes from is that the Server is doing most of the work and therefore the horsepower needs to be there. The Thin Client in this case is merely animating the screen content and sending the keyboard and mouse data to the Server. What we have seen...

In the beginning, thin-client terminals booted from a server, had very slow CPUs with small amounts of memory, and relied on application servers to provide needed features. It is no surprise that these early thin clients didn't take off because delivery was poor (high bandwidth requirements, low color support, no sound, etc.) and the application...

When thin clients first appeared on the market over 10 years ago, IBM was a great proponent of this technology even though the first units had slow CPUs, limited memory, and Linux-based operating systems. In the early days of thin clients, networks were still employing hubs instead of switches. Hubs share all network traffic with all the attached devices; therefore, this type of technology did not work well...
