A leading international food wholesaler operating in more than 30 countries worldwide. Globally, the Group’s network includes 622 stores across 21 countries, of which 524 provide out-of-store delivery services. In addition, they operate over 100 dedicated depots focused on food service distribution. In 12 counties, the company runs an exclusively delivery-based model through it’s Food Service Distribution (FSD) business.

They primarily serve the Hotels, Restaurants, Cafés/Catering (HoReCa) sector, supporting small and medium sized enterprises including hotels, restaurants, catering companies, bars, cafes, canteen operators, and independent traders such as grocery stores and kiosks.

In the year 2023/2024, they generated global revenue of €31 Billion and operate 100 stores nationwide: all managed from its headquarters in central France.

The Challenge

Modernize & Futureproof...

In 2023, the wholesaler operated an on-premises Omnissa Horizon (Formerly VMware Horizon) VDI environment across their 100 stores. Imprivata Enterprise Access Management (EAM) provided secure Single-Sign-On (SSO) ensuring fast, compliant authentication across all sites and devices.

At Group level, they had been working with strategic partner Wipro since 2021 to design and implement a global, cloud-first IT strategy focused on scalability, security and operational efficiency. As part of this evolution, they began transitioning towards Horizon Cloud, centralizing desktop delivery and reducing operational overhead as they scaled across sites, while maintaining Imprivata EAM integration.

At the endpoint level, they relied heavily on approximately 1,500 legacy Dell Wyse Tera2 Zero Clients, supporting only the PCoIP protocol, alongside some traditional fat client PCs. These devices presented two critical risks:

  • Hardware nearing end-of-life
  • The planned retirement of PCoIP support

A new endpoint solution needed to:

  • Support Omnissa Blast Extreme
  • Align with Horizon Cloud
  • Maintain Imprivata EAM and SSO capabilities/functionality
    • This seamless, automated and optimized workflow needed to be consistent across the updated tech stack
  • Provide full French language support
  • Improve wireless infrastructure connectivity

During evaluation, Horizon Cloud ecosystem support was still emerging, making alignment between 10ZiG, Omnissa and Imprivata especially crucial. The teams worked together to develop and validate integration support across the Horizon Cloud environment, before handing to the wholesaler for testing.

The Solution

Flexible, Secure, Modernized, and Fully Managed.

The end user was initially introduced to 10ZiG in 2023. Following a successful POC, they deployed an initial batch of two hundred 10ZiG devices to replace aging Dell Wyse endpoints.

They selected 10ZiG’s NOS™ software based Zero Client OS for Horizon, delivering:

  • The latest Horizon Client support
  • Small, secure footprint
  • Fast boot times
  • Simplified updates
  • Intuitive user experience
  • Support for Imprivata EAM

Critically, the solution included the FREE 10ZiG Manager™ server, enabling centralized endpoint management across 100 distributed stores. This provided:

  • Zero touch deployment
  • Firmware management
  • Mass configuration updates
  • Auto-populated group policies
  • Remote shadowing for user support

When replacing the remaining devices, the wholesaler chose to split procurement across two vendors to maintain flexibility and long-term resilience. 10ZiG and Dell were selected, both meeting the defined technical requirements within project timelines.

To ensure continuity of secure access and authentication, 10ZiG worked closely with the end user and its technology partners, such as Imprivata, to ensure EAM and SSO functionality whilst maintaining consistency of the user experience and workflow throughout the transition.

Speaking with the Infrastructure Systems Engineer, the key technical lead for the project at the wholesaler, they said “10ZiG are the most suitable devices. Whether I am using Horizon Cloud Gen 1 or Horizon Cloud Next Gen, I only need one firmware version. With Dell, I require two. From a management perspective, 10ZiG Manager™ is more intuitive and offers auto-population filters for groups, making deployment across stores much simpler.”
