The Court had been using Dell Wyse Zero Clients on VMware vSphere with Windows XP as their virtual desktops within their computing environment, and they needed to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. Installed at their front desk stations for security purposes, they had HD cameras for photo purposes that simply would not work with Windows 7 via Dell Wyse Clients. Several Dell Wyse Zero Clients and Thin Clients were tested out, but nothing would work… and their support was not very inventive or helpful at all. The Network Administrator was looking at a total infrastructure refresh in complete frustration, and stuck.

AmicusHorizon needed to replace their old Thin Client estate to keep up with the ever-increasing demands of their end users. The current devices couldn’t offer support for video conferencing, audio and on-demand video streaming that were becoming a must have for their employees. They wanted to find the best value device at the best price to service these needs. Andrew Rayfield, Infrastructure Technology Team Leader for AmicusHorizon said, “Following an organizational merger in 2009, we inherited 500 Dell Wyse 1200LE Thin Clients to use with our Citrix XenApp environment. As our demands grew, the devices couldn’t keep up. We needed to look for a new device to use in a full desktop refresh. Any potential provider had to support video conferencing, audio and on-demand video streaming. We needed a device to provide full Citrix HDX redirection. “Our plan included integrating Microsoft Lync 2010 with our Polycom system allowing video conferencing from the desktop into virtual meeting rooms. Support for webcams was paramount with an additional requirement for seamless compatibility of SD cards. We also have over 80 sites throughout Kent, the South Coast and South London. Centrally managing our desktop devices from our data center in Sittingbourne is imperative.

Ideally, any new device management solution would be intuitive, scalable and free from both upfront cost and progressive upgrade charges.

Rayfield explained the importance of desktop performance, “The support of HDX media redirection on the 10ZiG Linux images (PEAKos) was a big factor in our decision. It has allowed us to take full advantage of our XenApp environment. The level of performance we can now provide for our staff is refreshing. We can offer support for video conferencing, audio and on demand video streaming. The redirection for HDX is done locally on the 10ZiG Thin Client so the server doesn’t face any increase in workload, even if all our users are utilizing these features at the same time. “The 10ZiG Management Server has given us the peace of mind to know we can act quickly, efficiently and effectively to the requests of our remote sites.

We use the 10ZiG Manager to push out firmware upgrades and updates, right down to controlling the screen resolutions of our remote users. First National Bank of Hutchinson has gradually been implementing VDI technology for the past five years but has recently made an extensive effort to “bump up” the implementation process. The bank has been using VMware Horizon View since the start of their VDI deployment and has recently switched to the most current version, VMware Horizon View 5.3, which offers faster performance and an optimal user experience.

With four remote locations, the bank needed a solution that would allow a high quality and uniform end user experience, over a low bandwidth connection and without the installation of additional servers at each branch. To achieve this, they needed an endpoint device that integrated seamlessly with VMware Horizon View and also something that would create a high performing and consistent end user experience.

Tim Miller, First National Bank of Hutchinson’s Senior Vice President and Manager of IT, said having four branches more than 45 minutes away from each other originally presented quite the challenge. “When initially implementing VDI, we knew we did not want to put additional servers at any of the branches and in order to get good performance for our workstations, we needed to find an end point device with a high performing, fast protocol that worked well over our wide area network. We also needed something that not only allowed us to reduce our need to visit those branches, but would also provide a uniform user experience that allowed our employees to move from terminal to terminal as well as from branch to branch.” Miller also commented on the free management utility. He said it took the burden out of managing multiple devices and allowed for centralized maintenance and full administrative control over all local and remote devices. When researching new endpoint devices, Miller said he was looking for several key factors. First, he needed a device that was simple to set up and simple to fix if something went wrong. “We needed a product that was pretty self-explanatory, so that if the need arose, we could send a new one out and the end user could more or less replace it by themselves.” Miller also said he needed to find a device that offered multiple monitor support, little to no virus exposure, and something that was easily upgradable as well as customizable.

“We wanted to make sure that whatever device we chose didn’t have an operating system because we didn’t want to worry about OS upgrades or viruses and also something that integrated well with VMware Horizon View,” he said. According to Miller, Zero Clients and the PCoIP Protocol had been of interest to him since the beginning of their VDI implementation. “The PCoIP Protocol is fast and having a fast protocol over a wide area network is extremely important.” He said this, coupled with the fact that Zero Clients have no moving parts, which means that less can go wrong, and no operating system to maintain, made his decision “much easier.”

According to Miller, the implementation and logistics of the roll out were seamless. “It’s been so simple and made our lives so much easier. We don’t have to deal with as much equipment and it worked immediately, right out of the box with our existing network. The configuration was minimal and very simple. It literally took five minutes to set up.” “The fact that 10ZiG’s support team is located in Phoenix, AZ has been an added bonus,” Miller said. “A lot of support teams are hard to get ahold of and very hard to understand. In so many cases this day in age support seems to be very lacking, but our experience with 10ZiG has been great in the very rare instance we have had to call.

To be honest, it’s such a good product nothing really ever goes wrong so we almost never need to call.” Miller said First National Bank of Hutchinson will continue to use 10ZiG for any future product refresh opportunities and would be more than willing to recommend 10ZiG to other interested companies. “Even though 10ZiG Technology isn’t as well-known as other brands, they sell quality products and we are very happy with the end result. We think down the road, even though there was some upfront investment in hardware and infrastructure costs that this is really going to pay off in so many different ways. We are definitely starting to see a return on our investment and couldn’t be happier.”

UKWM needed to find a device that would allow them to move away from aging fat client PC assets. To accomplish this, they needed to provide support for key desktop users with awkward requirements for card readers and dictation software. Furthermore, they had to find a management solution to take the headache away from supporting their aging PCs and local Windows desktops. Anthony Smith, Head of ICT for UK Wealth Management said, “We have been utilizing Citrix for 12 years now, starting right back at Citrix Metaframe and through the various flavors since, initially to support branch office and remote working but maintaining a traditional client server (or thick client) model at head office. In Spring 2012, we went Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) migrating our virtual servers and other services into a hosted data center, although we still manage from the O/S up. With every user effectively becoming a “remote” user at that point, we bit the bullet and migrated all of our users across to XenApp 6.5, to provide us with a secure, flexible and consistent desktop experience across the group. Once we had completed this migration, we knew we had to look at the hardware our employees were using to access their XenApp desktops. A third of our fleet were using laptops and the rest were sweating out old hardware assets running Windows XP. We had maintained these workstations mostly to provide support for a small number of awkward applications that we had not succeeded in migrating fully to XenApp. We felt strongly that managing and maintaining these Windows’ endpoints was a waste of resources, and knew we needed to look at alternatives. After some research we decided that Thin or Zero Clients were the way forward and decided that we would buy a small number of them as a pilot. We purchased two dozen devices from an unnamed, well known Thin Client manufacturer but instantly regretted the decision. We had problems with management, devices losing configuration, devices re-spawning randomly and, most importantly, they didn’t support our smart card readers or dictation applications. We were more than a little relieved that we had run the pilot! We had learned quickly that the previous Thin Clients weren’t up to par, and we didn’t want to buy the wrong devices a second time round. Any new Thin Client device had to offer us an easy and intuitive method of managing them, enable quick deployment, and provide support for the card readers we use with financial applications, and our digital dictation devices and software. We also needed to make sure the devices supported dual screens (which are used extensively across the business) and that we provided a consistent experience and great performance for our desktop users. My aim as Head of ICT is to make our jobs less complicated and to implement solutions that are as light as possible in respect of on-going support, maintenance, and administration, so that we can spend more time delivering value to the business rather than in low or no-value tasks. At this point, we hadn’t found a device which could meet our needs and ultimately, we couldn’t move away from PCs,” said Anthony.

"By utilizing a mixture of 10ZiG Thin and Zero Clients, UKWM are confident that they can migrate their desktops away from hard to manage PCs and over to 10ZiG devices. The new solution has streamlined the way that UKWM manage their end point devices and they can now seamlessly deliver business critical applications and peripherals to the desktop. “The 10ZiG users at UKWM are receiving a consistently high-quality experience, which has been painless to achieve with the 10ZiG units. We have offered users a fast boot time, dual screen support and seamless integration of smart card readers. We have a pretty straight forward application stack at UKWM but despite this, on the occasions we have needed to support more CPU and GPU intensive applications or multimedia performance, the 10ZiG devices have performed admirably. We also utilize the 10ZiG Manager, which has transformed the way we manage endpoint devices to the extent that virtually no management is now required. This allows us to focus our attention on adding value to the business elsewhere. A lot of the pain we currently experience surrounds managing PC’s and local Windows desktops, and this will effectively disappear with the full roll-out 10ZiG solution. We do use it to monitor which devices are in session, but we really have not had any need to manage or troubleshoot the 10ZiG’s yet, which is a far cry from our PC’s. We have tested the auto-deployment functionality of the 10ZiG Manager, and we feel that this is something we will find very useful and will utilize as we continue to migrate larger numbers of our users over to 10ZiG devices. In addition to these benefits, we have also reduced our carbon footprint by utilizing the 10ZiG devices which only consume 12 watts. As we are wholly owned by a private equity business, we are obliged under the CRC regulations to report our power consumption, the power and therefore carbon savings have been well received when we reported them. We estimate that with a full deployment, over the next three years we could save up to £250,000 in end user efficiency, power, management savings, and replacement costs once we have fully implemented the 10ZiG devices. Although the 10ZiG solution has had an instant impact, we believe that the full benefits of the solution will be unearthed in the next three to four months as we ramp up the number of devices. We can see where these benefits will come from, and it has definitely been a positive experience so far and we are pleased with how it is progressing. The 10ZiG Sales Team have been excellent from the outset and have held our hand throughout the project. They have been very informative, responsive to our needs and available on demand. Ignis Asset Management had already implemented VMware Horizon View as its desktop delivery method and was now looking to upgrade its HP Thin Client estate with modern Zero Clients that could fully support the PCoIP Protocol. The challenge was to take the complexity out of the day-to-day management of the desktop and the problems that were created by running a Windows Thin Client with two desktop OSs, both the local one and in the virtual machine, while providing seamless support for specialist peripherals. Blair Kirkland, Technical Specialist (Desktop
Virtualization) at Ignis said, “We have always had an interest in Zero Client technology and how it could reduce the complexity of managing our desktops. Unfortunately, at the time of our initial project, VMware Horizon View Zero Clients couldn’t offer us the dual and quad screen support we required, and the best solution appeared to be provided by Windows. We implemented HP T5740e Windows Embedded 7 Thin Clients, adding them to the domain and managing them as domain devices through group policy. It’s fair to say that this solution was not ideal.
Supporting two desktops was a definite drain on our resources and added a layer of complexity. In addition, we were experiencing latency issues and we felt that performance could be significantly improved. The Windows services and drivers running in the background took a chunk of resource away from the processing power of the Thin Client and it constrained the end user experience. Our users also found it difficult and sometimes confusing to have two desktops. To change a password, they had to amend it locally on the Thin Client, otherwise it wouldn’t pass through to the virtual machine. The system wasn’t particularly intuitive either. “We had always kept one eye on Zero Clients, one of the main reasons being the need to take the burden away from supporting business critical applications and peripherals. A good example of this is the experience we had with some of our system keyboards which required software to be installed on both the virtual machine and the Thin Client. We knew that a Zero Client would erase this problem and make it easier to integrate other peripherals such as our dictation devices and label printers.”

Ignis has been reaping the rewards of its new 10ZiG V1200 Teradici Solution both at the desktop and with the Support Team. Performance levels have increased, and login times have been halved, saving users valuable time and helping increase productivity. The 10ZiG V1200s are taken straight from the box, plugged in and are ready to use in about two minutes. 10ZiG have also supplied the PCoIP Manager free with the devices which made updates and firmware upgrades a simple and centralized process. The required changes can now be made with a couple of mouse clicks. In comparison to the old units, the V1200s have lowered the overall management overhead while providing us the very best performance in our VMware Horizon View environment.” said Kirkland.
“In terms of productivity, the reduction in boot time has been exceptional. By using folder re-direction, we have cut down the time it takes to reach the desktop from two and a half minutes to under a minute with the 10ZiG V1200s. This is not an insignificant amount of time across the business when you add the desktops up. Throughout the project, our relationship with 10ZiG has been a key benefit for us. The Sales Team have been very attentive and actioned any requests we had quickly and effectively… this experience has also been mirrored with the 10ZiG Support Team who have delivered an excellent level of support, which can only be a good sign for the future. We had not truly seen the benefits of our VMware View VDI solution until we implemented 10ZiG’s solution, and I am certain that this will continue as we deploy more V1200s onto desks. I certainly have no hesitation in recommending 10ZiG in the future.”
