The Court had been using Dell Wyse Zero Clients on VMware vSphere with Windows XP as their virtual desktops within their computing environment, and they needed to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. Through this tremendous effort from 10ZiG Tech Support & Sales Support over a period of time, a 10ZiG Zero Client finally worked and the Court ended up purchasing many of the 5848qv Zero Client devices. The Court also began to rely on the FREE 10ZiG Manager for centralized deployment and management. To date, all of their infrastructure problems have been solved, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.

Clark County, Nevada was founded in 1909 and named after U.S. Senator William Andrews Clark. The county’s motto is “Living Relentlessly, Developing Economically!” The Clark County District Attorney, Family Support Division, serves a population of over two million residents. The mission statement of the Clark County D.A. is to “Improve the lives of families by engaging and empowering parents in providing continuous support for their children.” This is accomplished by locating parents, establishing paternity and enforcing child support and arrearage orders. The unique responsibilities of the Clark County D.A. include having access to very sensitive personal information and the need to process and store this data in a secure environment. John Bauman, Systems Administrator, and a fifteen-year employee of the D.A. office, had to balance these factors with his other job functions. Bauman’s other job functions encompass hardware research and purchase recommendations, configuration, upkeep and reliable operation of the servers and a number of other IT operations.

Bauman was facing the challenge of upgrading a number of outdated Dell Wyse P20 Tera1 Zero Clients. Tera1 is considered “End of Life” (EOL) by its chipset manufacturer, Teradici, and is no longer officially supported by VMware as of Horizon 6.0.1 with View. “The reason that I had to upgrade all of our units is because I needed to upgrade to Zero Clients that had Tera2 processors. Tera2 processors are what is required to upgrade our VMWare ESXi and Horizon Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) farms to more current versions of VMware Horizon,” stated Bauman. 10ZiG delivers Tera2 Zero Clients with PoE (Power Over Ethernet) capability. Tera2 Zero Clients deliver high-performance, security and manageability on PCoIP hosted desktops for VMware View®, PCoIP remote workstations. Compared to Tera1 units, Tera2 units deliver substantial performance enhancements, including: Quad Display Support, stronger AES256-bit encryption with Smart Card support, up to five times the VDI pixel performance, and an average power consumption of only seven watts. “Before using 10ZiG, we did not have the capability to use PoE for our Zero Clients. With the use of the 10ZiG PoE and when an occasional power shortage occurs in our area, the units stay up and running because of the backup UPS system that the network switch is on,” said Bauman. Bauman continued, “I learned of 10ZiG through our IT vendor, Solutions II, here in Las Vegas. I chose to go with 10ZiG over the competition after researching a number of different hardware vendors. I took advantage of the 30-day free demo program from 10ZiG to thoroughly evaluate a number of their units. In comparison, there were distinct features of the Dell Wyse P25 that were not appealing:

  • A separate stand has to be purchased for the Dell Wyse P25 unit for it to be placed in a vertical position.
  • The Dell Wyse P25 unit only has one DVI port and one DisplayPort connector. A dongle has to be purchased separately to add another DVI port, whereas the 10ZiG V1200-P Zero Client comes standard with two DVI Ports.
  • The Dell Wyse P25 unit has only one audio out jack and it’s in the front of the unit. The 10ZiG V1200-P has two, both one in the rear pf the Client.”

PCC decided to initiate a VDI POC to better serve the needs of internal customers and also as a long-term strategy to reduce the overall workload of their ICT function. Physical desktops were needing to regularly be replaced to maintain sufficient performance for their apps and also required extensive hands-on management in terms of patching, app deployment and asset management. PCC staff found the physical desktop experience to be slow and frustrating. Problems commonly lead to end users having no access to the apps and resources they needed to continue working. In turn, this resulted in lengthy calls to the ICT Service Desk. After their initial VDI pilot using their existing infrastructure equipment to connect to their VMware Horizon environment, they quickly realized they would be better off replacing existing hardware with secure, easy-to-manage, Linux- based Thin Clients. Important to note, they rely upon Skype for Business as their full voice telecoms solution, so they thought it essential that a Thin or Zero Client solution provide solid support for this product and its technology. They started working with some resellers and began trials using demos from both Dell and HP. They ended up experiencing poor Skype for Business voice performance whilst testing Dell devices and that prompted PCC to start searching for alternatives. A Google search led them to 10ZiG Technology. A deeper dive into 10ZiG products and services peaked their interest and they reached out to find out more information, particularly on the Skype for Business front. 10ZiG EMEA dealt with their questions efficiently and PCC immediately felt positive that 10ZiG devices would more than likely be a good fit for their needs.

They always respond in the shortest period of time to any issue or request we send their way, no matter what the size or the urgency. They invest an incredible amount of time and resources into our VDI POC, ensuring that we have access to the software updates, trial devices, and expertise we needed to make it a success. They even purchased some of our preferred headsets, so they could work through some audio issues with the Skype for Business offload before delivering us a fix. They sent us additional headsets to test Skype, as well as a small cache of spare DVI adapters, in case we came across any faulty ones during our rollout. Other vendors struggled to respond to our VDI POC needs. Complications in our environment and requirements often resulted in testing failures that could not be overcome. 10ZiG ruthlessly persisted in ensuring that together, we got to the bottom of every challenge that presented itself. We’ve yet to come across a hardware failure in any of the devices purchased, and the software underpinning the solution seems solid and reliable. The support we have received from 10ZiG thus far gives me complete confidence that any challenges that may present themselves during the remainder of our rollout will be easily remedied. The Court had been using Dell Wyse Zero Clients on VMware vSphere with Windows XP as their virtual desktops within their computing environment, and they needed to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. Installed at their front desk stations for security purposes, they had HD cameras for photo purposes that simply would not work with Windows 7 via Dell Wyse Clients. Several Dell Wyse Zero Clients and Thin Clients were tested out, but nothing would work… and their support was not very inventive or helpful at all. The Network Administrator was looking at a total infrastructure refresh in complete frustration, and stuck.

As mentioned, an extension on an initial Zero Client demo was granted, while the Court started to review other 10ZiG Client options. 10ZiG Tech Support was relentless in trying to find a way to get the right Zero Client working for the Court and did not stop until a solution was found. Through this tremendous effort from 10ZiG Tech Support & Sales Support over a period of time, a 10ZiG Zero Client finally worked and the Court ended up purchasing many of the 5848qv Zero Client devices. The Court also began to rely on the FREE 10ZiG Manager for centralized deployment and management. To date, all of their infrastructure problems have been solved, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.
