What to Look For in VDI Endpoint Management Software
Last update: November 27, 2018
IT professionals and end users often talk about how they are not getting the best from their paid endpoint management software programs for virtual desktop infrastructure. The performance of their centralized management software often has them frustrated, as well as the cost. Not to mention, related tech support agreements that should work in their favor, but really don’t. Here is a little help with what to look for in truly great endpoint management software.
Endpoint management software with no hassle
Who needs hassle? Your IT philosophy should be this – why should you settle for the disappointment of centralized management software and tech support that may cost you money? Look for endpoint management software that is simple, user-friendly, and highly functional with all the technical advances and support you deserve. It should come at no-cost and include an unlimited number of users/licenses. It should make endpoint management, configuration, and deployment efficient and effortless.
Endpoint management software that’s always FREE
It really is as simple as that. Your endpoint management software should always be FREE with endpoint device purchases. Tech Support for a number of years should also come complimentary with the right software program from the right vendor. This should cut your research down if you’re new to looking for endpoint management software, and your frustration down if you’re paying for one right now and realizing that you should not be. It certainly makes you think, right?
Endpoint management software that’s easy to use
Why make things difficult? With the right endpoint management software, IT Admins can remotely control any endpoint, including x86 devices to laptops, tablets, Thin & Zero Clients, etc., into one centrally-managed and easy-to-use platform. By connecting via a LAN/WAN or the Cloud, you should be able to manage large volumes of endpoints located remotely in cities across the country, or anywhere in the world. Set-up and updates should be easy, and support should be readily available.
Endpoint management software with good Tech Support
Let’s face it, questions are going to come up and you’re going to have bumps in the road. Things that shape the best endpoint management software sometimes have nothing to do with technology. How about an easy-to-understand, U.S.-based support team? Great endpoint management software should be easy to work with and expedite management of your endpoints with efficiency and offer all the tech support that you could possibly need.
Endpoint management software with advancing tech features
That’s right, “advancing.” Your endpoint management software should be ever-evolving when it comes to tech, security, and management features, both in and out of the Cloud. Some key things to look for and/or ask about with endpoint management software are – Is it Cloud-Ready? Does it have Role Based Access? How easy is its Automatic Configuration & Firmware Versioning? How in-depth are its Reporting features? What about its Power Management, Task Scheduling, Shadowing, etc.? Does it have Distributed Firmware Versioning? And, what new features will soon be added?
Endpoint management software with quality endpoint devices
At this point, we can make things really easy for you. Did you know that The 10ZiG Manager™ is fully-free, easy-to-use endpoint management software provided to all 10ZiG customers using Linux and Windows based Thin Clients as well as 10ZiG NOS™ Zero Clients running on VMware, Citrix, Microsoft and Parallels RAS platforms? 10ZiG and ThinPrint enter into technology partnership for high-performance printing with virtual desktops
Last update: November 6, 2018
An integrated ThinPrint Client and the ThinPrint Hub provide high-performance printing for 10ZiG Thin Clients in VDI & server-based computing environments – with or without a print server.
PHOENIX, AZ & DENVER, CO – November 6, 2018 – 10ZiG Technology, a world leader in Thin and Zero Client endpoints for desktop virtualization, and ThinPrint, provider of the world’s leading print management software of the same name, have entered into an OEM partnership. As part of the cooperation, the ThinPrint Client has been integrated into 10ZiG Thin Clients for fast, high-performance printing. 10ZiG Zero Clients can also print plug and play securely and quickly with the ThinPrint Hub, even when using a print server.
The use of Thin Clients and Zero Clients has invaluable benefits for companies with Citrix, VMware, Parallels and Microsoft RDS environments. However, using print servers is difficult because they are often not able to send the data directly to the Thin and Zero Clients. Thanks to the integration of the ThinPrint Client, 10ZiG Thin Clients can now – even when using a print server – use ThinPrint functions for print data compression, tracking, and encryption. With the ThinPrint Hub’s plug and play capability, fast and secure Zero Client printing to network printers is guaranteed. Print data can be transmitted compressed to the printer via a separate, encrypted secure tunnel. The management of the print infrastructure takes place centrally in a console.
Says CPO of ThinPrint GmbH., Thorsten Hesse, “We are delighted to have renowned VDI endpoint manufacturer 10ZiG on board. 10ZiG devices
are an excellent fit with our philosophy of making productive work as easy and convenient as possible for IT admins and users. 10ZiG Thin and Zero Clients,
as well as the ThinPrint Hub, can be started up with plug and play even by laypeople and then remotely managed by the experts in a convenient, centralized console.
This opens up enormous optimization and savings potential.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure - a Clear Definition.
Last update: October 30, 2018
Not quite sure what exactly Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is, or what it’s all about? You’re not alone. 10ZiG is often asked by IT professionals and prospective clients for a clear understanding, so we’re offering a comprehensive, clear explanation along with answers to some frequently asked questions in this introduction to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
A Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (also referred to in the industry as VDI) is an environment in which a desktop operating system such as Windows or Linux, is hosted on a centralized, remote server. End users’ data, as well as desktop images, are managed within what is called a “virtual machine” – a completely isolated and secure guest operating system installation within a normal host operating system residing on a server. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure management software allows users to access their desktop operating systems and applications just as if they were on their computers. It also allows them to access, present, and communicate data to workstations over a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN). Examples of these VDI software brokers include VMware, Citrix, Microsoft, and Parallels.
Why Would a Company Opt to Implement a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
Why take on a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure environmental transformation? Here’s why! Virtual Desktop Infrastructure may be right for you and your organization if you’re interested in strong data security, efficient patch management, information recovery, on-demand storage, speed, performance, saving money, and more. These issues are commonly problematic with conventional computers and network environments – and frustrate IT professionals in nearly any industry to this day. A Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can replace a fat PC environment with the right hardware endpoints and can help to address all of these problems. Brash, energy-hungry, overpowered fat PCs that run a full-blown local Windows OS – requiring regular patching, anti-virus, and imaging, etc. – just no longer make sense in today’s modern IT environment.
Since Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is all about moving desktop management from a local environment to a virtualized one, end users access “virtualized” operating systems and applications via endpoint devices like Thin Clients & Zero Clients for VDI. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure endpoints like Thin & Zero Clients are easier to deploy, manage, and maintain than fat PC monsters. Centralized endpoint management software allows IT Departments to save incredible time and money in creating efficiencies via maintaining all endpoints from whatever location the IT admin is in – meaning upgrades, application deployments, and virus control can be centrally managed, rather than being handled individually at desktop workstations. Additionally, when done right, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can be incredibly energy-efficient due to VDI endpoints requiring much less power than a traditional PC, the related hardware can have a longer life-span, and the levels of risk concerning data theft can be massively reduced because the users’ data is stored centrally.
More Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Pros (and a Few Cons)
There are so many advantages to considering a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure – Pros:
In addition the reasons above, with the right endpoints, a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can save on physical work space as they tend to be much smaller than standard PCs, etc.
As mentioned, a VDI set-up will have end user applications and features found with a traditional fat PC, but being stored and operating on a server.
Because everything is located in the server, data is also more secure than ever.
A VDI environment is a great solution if your set-up requires local legacy end user applications like Office/PDF viewers, applications that run on Linux or Windows, flexibility of running multiple brokers and/or changing a broker at will, and the need for wireless support.
In addition to IT cost reductions, improved security, end user mobility, reduced hardware costs, end user reach (remote), and better disaster recovery – with the right centralized management software, a VDI environment also allows you to work effectively in the Cloud.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure – Cons:
The cons to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure are that it can generally be a bigger investment up front in order to get to gain even larger and long-term cost-savings down the road. Some people are resistant to change, and it may take some coaxing for (and convincing of) some folks to give it a chance.
Does a Virtualization Desktop Infrastructure Have Cost Benefits?
In addition to the above benefits to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, there are a number of cost benefits when using a VDI that are helpful to know about. VDI endpoints like Thin or Zero Clients for example, last around 4-6 years longer than PCs, resulting in less hardware refreshes. What this means is that you spend fewer resources on deploying, managing, patching, upgrading, supporting, and eventually retiring PC desktops. Overall, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure hardware expenses should also lessen, as users can share resources allocated to them on an as-needed basis.
Equally as important, your Tech Support resources can be better used in other ways. This is due to the fact that there is no longer a need for them to go to the actual desktop workstation to resolve technical issues, or to upgrade and maintain potentially hundreds or thousands of individual desktop operating systems. In a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, all endpoints are managed, troubleshooted, and updated centrally by the centralized endpoint management software console. Worker productivity will also increase as there are naturally fewer technical failures due to more dependable hardware and a locked-down desktop operating system.
Overall, the initial investment of time and resources in implementing a Virtualization Desktop Infrastructure environment will pay huge long-term dividends in the savings of not only money, but also time – and increases worker productivity.
What Should I Consider When Starting a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure POC?
A Virtual Desktop Infrastructure begins with establishing and clarifying your organization’s primary objectives regarding an implementation of a virtual desktop interface.
Budgeting
Timelines/Timeframes
End user requirements
Number of end users
Management goals and considerations
IT goals and considerations
The right endpoints
The right vendors
The right centralized management software console
The right brokers
…and much more, are all part of the VDI plan decision-making process.
All of the mentioned will likely require time for research and debate. Final decisions should be put down in writing – secured budget should be finalized, etc. – and then the VDI rollout can begin. Try to identify the needs and wants of your current end users, their current computing environment, and their endpoints – during Virtual Desktop Infrastructure planning and development. For example, 1) if frequent updates of applications are a concern, determine how this can be most effectively approached, or 2) perhaps organizational growth potential causes scalability concerns for VDI that should be included in plans, or 3) your team may need to address issues of new VDI compatibility with some hardware, etc., and so on and so on.
Selecting a VDI broker and the best protocol for your Virtual Desktop Infrastructure will be something you’ll want to start looking into from day one of your VDI planning. What protocols are you currently using, if any? What are your end users’ needs? How many endpoints will you be requiring? Will there be any licensing requirements associated with your VDI implementation? One of the keys to a successful VDI deployment is using the right remote display protocol. There are many different protocols available to use with minimal to strong graphic support and capabilities to optimize your remote desktop experience. Today’s latest modern protocols & codec support include VMware Horizon’s Blast Extreme or PCoIP, Citrix HDX, Microsoft VDI/RDSH, RDP, Parallels RAS, and Teradici PCoIP.
How do I Know What Endpoints to Use For Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
Determining your end users’ current and desired usage is a critical step in finding the right Virtual Desktop Infrastructure endpoints. Taking into account of who is doing what (and what they want to be able to do) from a computing standpoint is going to lead you in the right direction of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure endpoint selection by pinpointing specific needs and narrowing the broad scope. Maybe you need a VDI endpoint for users who require computer access, but perhaps not all day long and perhaps not to a sophisticated degree of functionality. In which case, you are dealing with a “Task User.” “Knowledge Users” are employees who also solely use computers for basic applications, such as the above-mentioned Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Web browsers, etc., but they tend to require a higher level of functionality than a Task User. There is an increase in general usage along with light web browsing.
You may discover that you need Virtual Desktop Infrastructure endpoints that can handle a larger work load, along with higher media capabilities including HD Video/Audio, Flash/HTML5, video conferencing, and 3D & CAD support. These end users, or “Power Users,” typically require heavier processor usage, stronger media capability, and the ability to run multiple applications… all without compromising the speed of a device. Finally, there is the most demanding type of VDI end user that requires media-rich graphic and video optimization; and that is the “Media User.” Like Power Users, this type of end user still needs to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously, yet also has enhanced performance demands for multimedia. Large amounts of video/audio need to be able to be worked with and handled, unlike that of the other groups with simpler media needs.

AWS Thin Clients and AWS Zero Clients; Winning Cloud Computing & Endpoint Device Solutions
As you may or may not already be familiar, Amazon WorkSpaces is a fully-managed, secure Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution that provides end users access to virtual, cloud-based desktops. Amazon WorkSpaces cloud computing is a great alternative for IT Professionals not yet ready to dive full-force into a backend Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. With it, you can provision virtual, cloud-based desktops, providing access to documents, applications, and resources – anywhere, anytime; from any supported device. There are no long-term contracts or upfront commitments with Amazon Workspaces. The pay-as-you-go pricing means you pay only for what you use. You are charged based on monthly or hourly billing, and number of WorkSpaces. Plus, you can delete at any time.
Because “you’re in the Cloud,” you’ll experience simpler management of desktop computing infrastructure by avoiding the complexity of maintaining, patching, and managing a large physical desktop environment or a complex VDI solution. With “AWS,” each end user is provided with access to storage. When accessing desktops, a remote display protocol is used to compress, encrypt, and encode data. Only images are transmitted and therefore, security is also a big benefit. AWS Thin Clients and AWS Zero Clients make excellent cloud computing and device endpoint options.

Last update: July 11, 2018
The 10ZiG 5910q Win 10 IoT Thin Client, qualified for HDX Ready, HDX Premium and HDX 3D Pro verification levels, is the first Citrix Ready verified endpoint to support the new H.265 video decoding ability on Citrix Receiver for Windows, setting a new industry standard which will enhance Citrix workspace solutions for its customers using 10ZiG endpoints.
PHOENIX, AZ – July 12, 2018 – 10ZiG Technology – a leader in Thin and Zero Client endpoints for desktop virtualization – today announced that its 5910q Windows 10 IoT Thin Client is verified as Citrix Ready and becomes the first VDI endpoint provider to achieve the new Citrix H.265 encoding support.
Not long after the Citrix release of H.265 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Technology, 10ZiG was quick to respond and support the revolutionary codec via its exceptional triple-monitor, 4K UHD, power class 5910q Windows 10 IoT Thin Client. Once HEVC was announced for Citrix XenDesktop7.16 and NVIDIA GPUs, 10ZiG left slower-moving endpoint providers behind by quickly becoming the first to achieve Citrix Ready for the H.265 codec.
Says Kevin Greenway, 10ZiG CTO, “As with any new release feature, 10ZiG is always ready to quickly get our cutting-edge, high-performing, hardware supportive as soon as possible. Our 5910q device for Windows 10 IoT is the perfect fit for H.265 codec support, as it really pushes the boundaries with its high-quality,

Linux Thin Clients can be the Perfect VDI Endpoint Solution
Last update: June 19, 2018
Linux Thin Clients Solved Conestoga Wood Specialties’ VDI Problems
In business since 1964 and a long-time 10ZiG customer, Conestoga Wood Specialties Corporation (Conestoga) has built their reputation as America’s leading supplier of custom cabinet doors and wood cabinet components. Their focus is dependability and their commitment is supporting cabinet manufacturers with the highest quality products, the most ethical business practices, and the best record for complete and on-time delivery within their industry. As a wood product manufacturer, Conestoga’s shop environment is a very dusty one. Wanting to track various processes and stages that their product cycles go through, they needed to add PCs, which generally do not hold up well in this type of environment. A Linux Thin Client OS environment was their perfect VDI solution; and, here’s why.
Up until about 2006, Conestoga was using IBM dumb terminals on their dusty shop floor that were connected to their IBM AS/400. Learning that Twinax connections were no longer going to be part of IBM’s future, and wanting to do more at their work stations in the dusty shop, Conestoga decided to demo and go with the option of, then BOSaNOVA, 10ZiG Thin Clients for their Virtual Desktop Infrastructure environment. The main goal of Conestoga was to have numerous workstations on their shop floor that would report the various steps of their wood manufacturing process as needed. Their manufacturing paperwork is barcoded. As an order moves through the plant, it is scanned into their system as the manufacturing process steps are completed in real time. This is done with scanners, which are connected via USB port to Thin Clients. The Thin Clients are also used for other tracking purposes on the floor – shipping/packaging, information entry, quality control reporting with products, and inventory searches and follow up. Staff is also able to use their intranet to check email via Outlook web access, look up documents in the document control center, open Word and Excel docs through Open Office, and more. Linux Thin Client devices by 10ZiG Technology ended up working for them and fitting their needs.
Linux Thin Clients by 10ZiG with The 10ZiG Manager; a Winning VDI Combination for Conestoga
The ultimate solution that Conestoga chose was 10ZiG Linux Thin Client OS environment. Working with 10ZiG from 2006-to-date… initially, their purchases were 10ZiG BOSaNOVA hardware; and over the years, many rebranded 10ZiG Thin Client service purchases were solutions as well. Fast-forward to present day, where Conestoga currently uses Linux Thin Client 10ZiG 5802q Series devices. As a result, they have ordered many of the wireless version, obviously also saving money by not having to run wires. They do have a robust wireless infrastructure at most of their sites as of today. They also use the free10ZiG Manager™Centralized Management Software utility, to copy and configure all new Linux Thin Clients before deploying them, saving them tremendous time – and also for uploading new firmware. To date, Conestoga has hundreds of 10ZiG/BOSaNOVA devices in production in all of their sites, collectively. 10ZiG Linux Thin Client devices work very well with their IBM AS/400 platform; they are durable and highly functional in the wood shop’s manufacturing environment, and the 10ZiG Manager makes it easy for them to roll out additional new 10ZiG Linux Thin Client devices.
“We have never heard anything but good things regarding our 10ZiG Linux Thin Client devices. The benefits that we see are that employees who work on the shop floor are able to quickly report what is happening at any given moment with our many product orders that are in the production process. We continue to have a close relationship with 10ZiG and we don’t see that changing because our company continues to rely heavily on the IBM AS/400 (IBM i) and we need those 10ZiG Thin Clients out on our shop floor. Customer service and technical support are also great. I do recommend 10ZiG to other companies.
The Wireless Thin Client; Why It Can Be A Really Good Fit, Literally…
Last update: January 18, 2018
Wireless Thin Client; Its Benefits Fit The Bill… And, More
As we know, a Thin Client is a lightweight, small piece of solid-state hardware designed for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions. With these devices, everything in your desktop environment is stored on your server or data center, as they virtually replace individual PCs and their related individualized storage. The Thin Client is a low-cost, locked-down, small form factor device that saves energy and IT resources. Its management and deployments are easy and centralized via a software utility. Now, when Thin Clients comes with a wireless optional feature, a Wireless Thin Client … then, you have all of this and more.
When your Virtual Desktop Infrastructure environment offers a WiFi-based area network, the benefits of a Wireless Thin Client can truly be a perfect fit:
Fit for Logistics: Particular environments that are over-crowded or consist of cramped tight spaces, often with several required end users, find Wireless Thin Clients are just right for fit and logistics. The Thin Client remedies the space issue, but the Wireless Thin Client remedies it even more by not having the need for associated cabled wiring. “How do I get cable in there? is no longer an issue.
Fit for Cost: Not having to pay for labor and installation of wiring is definitely a great feature of “going” Wireless Thin Client. This can be a good fit for saving a tremendous amount of money and time, and sometimes frustration, while putting your budget into other efforts, like the Wireless Thin Clients themselves.
Fit for Tidiness: The Wireless Thin Client VDI environment offers the advantage of potential tidiness and cleanliness. Less hardware in general, and no wiring, does tend to keep things nice and fit. Virtual and wireless make a great combination for environmental appearance and space usage.
Fit for Speed: A Wireless Thin Client swaps out the traditional, more old school, hardwired, cabled workhouse for a modern, freeform, high-tech, fit for speed, power, and performance. With wireless, most of the time you’re up and running, fast and furious … full-speed ahead.
Fit for Security: The VDI Wireless Thin Client environment also offers top-notch security when done right. Be sure that authentication and encryption are configured for devices/users for restricting and securing your wireless network:
Use either WPA2 Personal (PSK–Pre-Shared Key) or WPA2 Enterprise if available, encrypting traffic using CCMP/AES where possible.
If wireless is used in an open or public space, be sure you are encrypting your VDI traffic using your chosen remoting protocol such as HDX/PCoIP/Blast Extreme/RDP.
Wireless Thin Clients; Fit Into Many Industries… Just Right
As mentioned, busy work environments can be are cramped, busy, and probably not going to be getting any bigger are very likely good considerations for Wireless Thin Clients. An example of this is the manufacturing industry environment; with one such example being Conestoga Wood Specialties in Pennsylvania. Their wood product manufacturer’s shop floor was all of the above things; and, dusty! Wanting to track the various processes and stages of their wood product cycles, they found that they needed to add devices on the shop floor, and PCs were simply not an option. They needed numerous workstations with end users that would report the various steps of their wood manufacturing process as needed. Thin Clients, in particular Wireless Thin Clients, were their solution. Durable and highly functional, no wiring, and everything stored in the server area … plus, endpoint trouble-shooting, firmware updates, management and deployments all done through a centralized management software utility, made the wood shop reporting system possible (read case study here). The health industry, hospitals; the education industry, classrooms and labs; the manufacturing industry, shop floors; and more … depend on Wireless Thin Clients as an option for their computing environments, so that patients can heal, students can learn, and products can be built in the most effective manner and the most efficient speed.
Wireless Thin Client; Working With The Right Vendor … Have You Met 10ZiG?
