Amazon WorkSpaces Clients – Taking a Look at AWS and Client Endpoints

Amazon WorkSpaces Clients – Taking a Look at AWS and Client Endpoints

Have you checked out Amazon WorkSpaces?

It is hard to believe Amazon WorkSpaces was released as a public beta almost seven years ago already. Amazon WorkSpaces is one of the end user computing services Amazon offers to its customers looking to provide cloud-based desktops running Windows 10 or Linux variant. Amazon WorkSpaces offers persistent cloud desktops only. (Persistent is a virtual desktop that can save data and user settings on the operating system. When using persistent delivery, messages are persisted to disk/database, so that they will survive a broker restart.)

The virtual hardware configurations offered for Amazon WorkSpaces have everything, covered from a 1 vCPU/2GiB Value machine all the way to a GraphicsPro bundle with 16 vCPUs and 122 GiB of memory! The Graphics and GraphicsPro Amazon Workspaces bundles offer 1 vGPU with 4 or 8 GiB of dedicated Video RAM. All Bundles come standard with SSD backed storage for the OS drive and persistent user drive.

What is WorkSpaces Streaming Protocol (WSP)?

More recently, during their annual AWS re:Invent, Amazon officially marked WSP (WorkSpaces Streaming Protocol) as generally available, but not for the Graphic bundles. This protocol was introduced in its beta form in late 2019. The WSP protocol is key to ensure the best possible user experience when the network might be unreliable, or users are not very close to the Amazon region where they are hosted. For example – Amazon says that user experience is best when 250ms (or less) for a desktop using the WSP protocol versus only 100ms RTT (round trip time) for PCoIP. WSP also supports the use of common secure access methods like CAC and PIV cards for authentication into the Workspaces desktop.

While the WSP protocol is still being developed, it is preferred when you have a more dispersed workforce with various network conditions or require the ability to use the CAC/PIV cards. The PCoIP protocol created by Teradici, is still preferred for graphic workloads, Amazon WorkSpaces Client Zero endpoints, and mobile devices. WSP utilizes ports 4195 TCP and UDP, whereas PCoIP will use 4172 for both TCP and UDP. (We will get to PCoIP Amazon WorkSpaces Clients soon…)

The Amazon WorkSpaces Application Manager (WAM)

For application deployments within Amazon WorkSpaces, you have a couple different options. You could utilize more traditional Client deployment tools, like SCCM to install applications, since they are full persistent desktops. Or, you could take advantage of Amazon WorkSpaces Application Manager (WAM) to deliver App containers either custom-built, or one you grab from the AWS Marketplace. You simply create the App yourself using the WAM Admin tool or find a suitable App from the marketplace to import into the Console. Then, you assign the App to a user or group from your directory and… voila! Without even needing to logout, the App is presented to the Workspaces desktop. You can view the utilization of an App and App assignments as well, from the Console. Profiles are simply stored in the UserProfile drive (D:), making desktop migrations easier and allowing users to preserve their data.

Amazon WorkSpaces Client Endpoints

Amazon WorkSpaces computing environments work perfectly with a supportive Amazon WorkSpaces Client endpoint like a Zero Client device, giving you all the benefits of cloud-computing combined with all the benefits of an AWS Zero Client, including higher security, lower IT costs, top computing performance, less IT support, and more.

As touched on above, Amazon WorkSpaces incorporates PCoIP® technology from Teradici. The PCoIP remoting protocol is used between end users’ devices and their Amazon WorkSpaces in the Cloud. The PCoIP protocol compresses, encrypts, and encodes the users’ Amazon WorkSpaces computing experience in the Cloud, and only transmits pixels across any standard IP network to Amazon WorkSpaces Clients. The Amazon WorkSpaces Clients receive encrypted pixels from the host and perform image decompression and decoding at the desktop.

Computing Security in an Unsecure World

Computing Security in an Unsecure World

With the hope that 2021 will take us into safer surroundings, we’ve already come to realize that it is not going to happen as soon as we would like it to. However, we also realize that computing environments should not add to your worry, in or out of office.

Security Check!

Do Your Endpoints Have The Following – in Office to at Home?

There are choices of endpoints for VDI and Cloud, but we will focus on what 10ZiG knows best – Thin & Zero Client hardware and software.

As an IT Admin or even End User, when it comes to security, you may want to be sure you can check off the items on this list with respect to the safety and protection of your computing environment, no matter where you are located

Just the very nature of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – in and out of Cloud – creates a safer, more protected computing environment for you and your organization. Everything is virtually managed at a single point of centralization, instead of several different computer workstations requiring individual management at numerous points. Security features when it comes to endpoint hardware also play a hand in terms of a safe computing environment.

Virus Control

Centralized management software with VDI automatically gives your computing environment the safest route when it comes to virus protection. Downloading can be restricted and when problems occur, they can easily be rectified by managing endpoints from one central location, offering superior remote control.

Data Protection

Virtual desktops are hosted on a central server, so data storage is completely centralized. Data is more secure and more protected because it is located in one location. This cuts down on the chances of downloading documents with sensitive materials by the wrong staff members or then being shared with outsiders.

Disaster Recovery

If the right procedures are put into place, backing up data without the risk of losing any files can also be beneficial. End users are less likely to be a victim of data theft from lost or stolen devices, as virtualization centralizes data on premises (or in the cloud) rather than on the endpoint devices.

TPM

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a computer chip (microcontroller) that can securely store passwords, certificates, encryption keys, etc. to authenticate an endpoint platform. It’s customary for Thin & Zero Client endpoints to offer TPM as an option and should be able to be added into the chasis of the hardware.

Smart Card Reader

Many industries and organizations require smart card authentication, particularly in high-security environments. Thin & Zero Client hardware offer a Smart Card Reader option for those requiring this added level of protection. The ability to read the card containing personal ID, authentication info, etc, is essential.

Kensington Lock

Support for a Kensington lock provided by way of a small hole, should be an option with your endpoints. This special lock is made for securing electronic equipment like VDI endpoints. The lock is not typically included, but support for it should be optional as again, some industries require this added level of security.

The Cloud Connector provides configuring and managing of 10ZiG Clients through its bi-directional SSL tunnel communication between the Clients and The 10ZiG Manager. It also proxies connection securely between web browsers using the Web Console for communication to The 10ZiG Manager. The Cloud Agent is available on both 10ZiG Linux & Windows Clients and is used to connect to the Cloud Connector both locally and remotely, in both cases connecting via the bi-directional SSL tunnel. For 10ZiG Linux Clients, the Cloud Agent is native in firmware and for 10ZiG Windows Clients, this feature was fast-tracked and debuted in the 2.1.0 XTC Cloud Agent update, in line with the unprecedented demand for remote management from customers.

Laptop versus Thin Client – Which is Your Best Ally for Home Office?

Laptop versus Thin Client – Which is Your Best Ally for Home Office?

Laptop versus Thin Client: Debate

Which Choice has the Home Advantage?

Without a doubt, we have been faced with home and remote office set-ups for us and our staffs, either on an immediate full time basis, or on a part-time basis as we now start to phase back into offices. None of this seems to be going away either, as a combined work-at-office approach may continue to become the norm. So, without a doubt, IT professionals are and will be relied on more than ever.

Within the haste to temporarily close doors and open up “offices” at home, some may have turned to laptops as an option with their alluring features like portability and everything all-in-one. Laptop versus Thin Client – let’s go over why Thin & Zero Clients were and still are a better option long term, and why they make the best ally when it come to working at a home or remote office set-up, in the office, and anything in-between.

Laptop versus Thin Client: Round One

To Laptop or Not to Laptop? IT Perspective

Laptop versus Thin Client – to begin with, a laptop’s battery is not very powerful. A laptop has a smaller, slower hard drive, and a slower processor. It also has little memory (RAM) and little capacity. Most laptops run Windows and require initial configuration. IT professionals are typically faced with adding on another Windows OS (for endpoint and for Cloud), which automatically doubles the workload and consequently, doubles the management. Furthermore, when repair is required for a laptop, a complete shutdown occurs as keyboard, monitor, and computer are bundled in one device.

With Thin & Zero Clients and virtual desktop infrastructure combined, these issues go away. Thin and Zero Client endpoints with a VDI environment offer remote management, so deployment, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades can be achieved and even automated using enterprise centralized management software – whether traditional VDI or VDI in Cloud. As IT professionals, you are in control of troubleshooting and monitoring without having to leave your own desk.

Laptop versus Thin Client: Round Two

A Computer for my Lap as a Full Home Service? – End User Point of View

The same features that make a laptop seem so appealing also are the very same features that make it not the best choice when it comes to a true home office setting. While the monitor, keyboard, and computer itself are bundled into one device, most struggle with too small of a monitor, a keyboard that is not designed for full time use, and a need for cables, docking station, and more. Also, end users often find themselves hunched over and crunched around their devices on couches or kitchen counters. With a Thin or Zero Client set-up, the endpoint is also very small form factor, monitor or monitors of any size are supported, and a more traditional full-size keyboard complements what is truly needed in a work-from-home (like you’re at the office) type of set-up.

Laptops are inherently less secure than Thin & Zero Client endpoints with VDI. With the latter, everything is safer and centrally managed in one location. No local storage no local apps, or operating systems, and less viruses and hacks that occur with infected downloading. With laptops, it is more difficult to get live and custom Tech Support from mass-producing vendors. Not close to a perfect “at home office” at all.

Laptop versus Thin Client: Round Three

The Laptop Affect – HR and the Bottom Line

The obvious attraction of mobility with a laptop certainly is appealing, however it is not a good long-term solution in terms of cost-savings. More like an expensive, short term quick fix. A Thin or Zero Client with VDI set-up is much more transferable and useable. No one heading back to the work office is going to boot up their laptop when they can have full-size monitors and keyboards, better speed, better performance, and more.

Laptops also consume more power and can be costly to repair. Repairs are more difficult and may require a long turnaround. They are also not appealing for health and Human Resource concerns. Laptops, and lack of traditional office set-up, are bad news and not sustainable when it comes to health and back related issues. And as remote or home offices have been on the rise and may continue to stick around, employee health can become a big concern.

Laptop versus Thin Client: Conclusion

Something for Short-Term Use is not a Long-Term Solution

Laptop versus Thin Client – unlike laptops, and certainly from the feedback we’ve been getting from IT Professionals and end users, Thin or Zero Client endpoints with VDI allows for all individual hardware components (keyboard, Client, mouse, etc.) to be reusable and repurposed – whether at home desk, or in the office – and is a smart, strategic, long-term investment. Specifically, with 10ZiG Thin & Zero Clients, VDI, and The 10ZiG Manager™. No need to deal with double OS, no VPN, none of the problems described above – whether immediate purposes or ongoing remoting option.

Working Remotely is The New Norm – How VDI & Remote Endpoints Can Help

Working Remotely is The New Norm - How VDI & Remote Endpoints Can Help

More than ever, we know that not working at the office location – i.e. working from home, etc. – is being tossed around in daily decision-making, and becoming more of the new norm. Let’s remind ourselves of why VDI, with the right remote endpoints, is a perfect option as a working off-site strategy. You can actually save your company the hassle of lost production. Check it out…

Why VDI & Remote Endpoints?

No Interruption in Productivity

Seemingly the obvious, but sometimes not paid attention to, is the idea that production at work affected by any kind of internal or external crisis, can and will occur. Your best weapon is being prepared for if and when it does happen. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with remote endpoints makes a compelling, productivity-saving case for remote employees (or “working remotely as an option” employees) for keeping things up and running.

Easy Desktop Management

VDI enables IT Support to have direct access to and knowledge of off-site end users, as well as their related remote endpoints. Applications are virtualized, and located and managed centrally. Similarly, end user data is also stored securely and centralized, and audited and managed by IT Support. Related licensing is not an issue because licensed software is kept within the central data center. Accessibility settings to data and programs can be applied and controlled. Viruses are mitigated, thanks to the support of centrally managed AV services, in addition to VDI-based provisioning and creation tools. Such tools can quickly re-provision desktops and application from a master image should disaster strike.

User & Device Security

With VDI and the right remote endpoints, off-site end user employees remotely connect to their organization’s virtual desktop platform that is configured by IT Support to meet all of the company’s security requirements and policies. While security at the device-level is of a lesser concern, ensure your chosen endpoints are stateless, not permitting local applications and data. Additionally, be sure to choose endpoints which include centralized management tools, offering features such as remote shadowing, firmware updates, and centralized configuration. Verify that your chosen centralized software tool offers cloud-based management and is a fully inclusive option for remote management, preferably negating the needs of VPNs and Secure Gateways and any other third party hardware.

Are Virtual Desktop Endpoints Right for Your Industry?

Are Virtual Desktop Endpoints Right for Your Industry?

Whether Banking & Financial, Retail, Health Care, Government, Military, Transportation, Education, Utilities, Real Estate, or something else – all industries in this day and age can truly benefit from a virtual desktop environment and related endpoints like Thin & Zero Client devices. This 10ZiG breaks things down a bit with some key industry insight from a VDI perspective.

Virtual Desktop Endpoints: Education Industry Demands

Focus, Quality, Quantity

Just like business professionals need to focus on business, in the world of Education, teachers need to focus on teaching – not spending time troubleshooting computer problems. Likewise, students need to be able to focus on learning. Schools and universities are turning to virtual desktop infrastructures requiring quality endpoints in large quantities for their high-demand teacher and student environments.VDI and the right endpoints take away workstation management, troubleshooting, and updates. The key thing to remember here is that while alternative virtual desktop devices are seemingly on-the-fly, cheap, and quick fixes – nothing can offer schools an enterprise classroom experience with value-class pricing like Thin or Zero Clients.

Virtual Desktop Endpoints: Banking/Financial Industry Demands

Security, Protection, Centralization

Financial and banking institutions are often targeted for breach of monetized data. Most financial organizations in this industry are aware of the risks they face and the potential devastation that just one single data breach can wreak. One of the ways they are avoiding this is the centralization of data. With VDI, it is far more effective to secure data within a central server in your data center. A manager software utility provides centralized configuring, maintenance, and control for endpoints, like Thin or Zero Client devices, which in turn enhances security, providing powerful protection against things like cyberthreats and viruses. Because financial data is stored on a central server, proprietary and sensitive organizational data is also safer from all forms of threats.

Virtual Desktop Endpoints: Health Care Industry Demands

Speed, Accessibility, Ease-of-Use

In the Health Care field, professionals need to take care of patients, not bothersome tech issues. This industry has been benefitting from VDI and Thin & Zero Clients with certifications like Imprivata® OneSign Single-Sign-On (SSO) for simplifying access to virtual desktops, for example. Health care professionals achieve speedy and highly secure access to clinical and administrative applications, streamlining workflow by stopping the need to repeatedly sign-in across multiple endpoints. Faster and easier access to patients’ records mean focusing on providing more efficient care. A flexible, reliable, and manageable solution for IT Managers in which they have no local OS to contend with, only the secure virtual desktop channel, is what more and more healthcare organizations prefer.

Virtual Desktop Endpoints: Government/Public Sector Industry Demands

Power, Endurance, Performance

The Government sector also demands a high level of security and endurance surrounding IT infrastructure and hardware. A VDI with Thin & Zero Client device environment is designed to fit the needs of this industry’s Federal, State, and Local establishments. Government services like defense and administration of justice in this industry often need customized, rack-mounted workstations, along with high-level security endpoints for virtual desktops. Thin or Zero Client devices in a VDI environment are becoming more common as high-profile data is centralized and stored in one server, and related hardware offers AES 256 and NSA Suite B cipher encryption, along with other serious performance features. Virtualized organizations can also attest to benefits of speed and security with this set-up.

Banking & Financial, Healthcare, Government and Education are just a few industry examples diving into virtual desktops and endpoints. Let’s not forget Manufacturing, Utilities, Real Estate, Military, Retail, Transportation, and more. If you find that you’re needing some of these industry demands from security to performance, you may want to consider what a virtual desktop environment can do for you.
